La Crosse Tribune journalists face several challenges and changes while reporting the news because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to limitations on large gatherings, in-person interviews and the increasing COVID-19 numbers in the community the staff at the Tribune are now adapting its ways of reporting news for the La Crosse community.
WISCONSIN MAN SHARES 95 YEARS OF ADVENTURES AND ADVICE

Born in 1926, Clarence Smieja is now entering his 95th year of life. As he sits down in his home to reflect, memories return from the farm, time in primary school, service in the Navy during WWII, and starting his own company. And with plenty of experiences under his belt, Smieja is eager to share his stores and advice to the younger generations.

The UW-Whitewater Police Department 2020 safety reports revealed a decrease in the volume and types of calls the department handles because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Calls to the department decreased by 19 percent, according to the police department newsletter.

GOVENOR COMES TO CAMPUS!

The Whitewater Student Government and staff leaders hosted Evers in the University Center’s Old Main Ballroom for a roundtable discussion about important issues facing U-W-Whitewater students, such as mental health, tuition increases, sexual health and assault, and abortion rights. Afterward, he was brought to the Warhawk Connection Center for a student meet and greet. He spoke with the Black Student Union, Latinos Unidos, LGBTQ, and many more organizations.
PUMPKIN PATCH EXTRAVAGANZA!

Members of the UW-Whitewater community may have seen a horse-drawn carriage parading through campus this past week. They may have even seen a pumpkin patch sprout out of the ground outside of the Young Auditorium. Well, if you did your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you.

CARNIVAL EXTRAVAGANZA!
May, 2022
To help relieve the stress of finals, the UC Live team hosted a carnival extravaganza on May 9th at the University Center North Mall at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater. The goal of this particular finals event was to give students a place to relax, eat, and spend time with some furry friends.
TOMMY THOMPSON BIDS FAREWELL TO UW-WHITEWATER

After announcing his retirement date at a Board of Regents meeting on February 11th, UW System President Tommy Thompson commenced a farewell tour. On this farewell tour, Thompson stopped at all UW schools, including UW-Whitewater, to say goodbye, celebrate his achievements, and thank those with whom he worked alongside. Our reporter, McClane Noffke, has more details on Thompson’s recent visit to Whitewater.
UW-WHITEWATER STUDENTS COMPETE IN FIRST-EVER RISING STAR TALENT COMPETITION

Since the start of the pandemic, UC Live has provided COVID-safe event options for students to enjoy. And as restrictions have lifted and classes have moved back to in-person, UC Live has decided to bring back more in-person events. This semester the UC team has introduced a brand-new event that allowed students to compete by showcasing their many talents. UW-Whitewater students practiced endlessly to perform at the first-ever Rising Star Talent Competition
IMPACT ADAPTS TO COVID-19 CRISIS: VIRTUAL MEETINGS, DRAG SHOWS, AND DISCUSSION BOARDS

UW-Whitewater’s IMPACT organization is finding unique and creative ways to bring fun, positive, and safe environments to university students despite the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPACT, an LGBTQ + Allies organization, is utilizing virtual meetings and even hosting its first-ever virtual drag show in order to stay in touch with students.

With fall sports postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Holmen Vikings football team is revving up for their unprecedented spring season.
In the fall of 2020, the Holmen Athletics department and coaches made the decision to move all fall sports to the spring.

As COVID-19 vaccinations roll out throughout the state, the Emergency Operations Committee has been working with county and local officials to develop a plan for the large-scale vaccinations of university students and staff, once additional vaccine doses are available.

According to reports from Wisconsin Public Radio station WGTD, over 10,000 signatures have been gathered since Friday, March 5th on Change.org after an alleged overnight assault by a UW-Whitewater men’s basketball player left at least one woman bloodied.

The spring 2021 commencement at the UW-Whitewater will be held in a hybrid format. This allows all graduates from both the Whitewater and Rock County campus' an opportunity to cross the stage in their cap and gown and receive their degrees in person

Chancellor Dwight C Watson announced the appointment of John Chenoweth as the next provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW-Whitewater. Chenoweth currently serves as dean of the College of Business and Economics, the largest accredited business school in Wisconsin.

As the fall semester kicks off, students will have the chance to welcome new leadership to campus. Over the summer, UW-Whitewater experienced some major leadership changes. On July 1st, Jim Henderson was named Interim Chancellor and Jim Chenoweth was named Provost and Vice Chancellor for academic affairs.

Interim Chancellor Jim Henderson announced the appointment of two leadership positions at the University Relations unit on September 22nd. Katie Kuznacic will serve as interim vice chancellor for university relations and Sandy Dunst will serve as interim president of the UW-Whitewater Foundation

Students, staff, and members of the Whitewater community gathered on October 13th for the naming celebration of the new student residence hall, Ma’iingan Hall. The name Ma’iingan was provided to the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater for consideration and was approved by the Chancellor’s Cabinet on December 9th, 2019.

UW System President Tommy Thompson will visit UW-Whitewater and join students, faculty and staff in a campus-wide celebration to mark the success of the university’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts. UW-Whitewater students have reported a 74% COVID-19 vaccination rate as of October 18th.

The City of Whitewater welcomes two new Kwik Trip stores to the community. The stores are set to open within the next two months and hiring is underway. One of the new Kwik Trips is located at 305 Elkhorn Road at the roundabout is scheduled to open at five in the morning

The University of Wisconsin – Whitewater is under new leadership after Interim Chancellor Jim Henderson’s abrupt resignation. Although new to the Chancellor seat, John Chenoweth is positive he can make a difference at the University. UWW-TV’s Jake Herrendeen has more on the story.
